ABOUT US
SATURDAY LOCOMOTIVE SERVICES
Specializing in Locomotive Repair and Preventative Maintenance
The company was established by our founder, Devon Generous, who would dedicate his Saturdays to repairing locomotives after a full week of working in a locomotive maintenance shop. This dedication inspired the name Saturday Locomotive Services.
Refurbishing the 1911 CP Roundhouse in Assiniboia: A Nationally Significant Revival
Cheryl and Devon Generous, owners of Saturday Locomotive Services Ltd, are lifelong historians who believe that preserving the past is essential to shaping the future. Their latest undertaking is as ambitious as it is meaningful: the full refurbishment and reclamation of the 1911 Canadian Pacific Railway roundhouse in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan.
This roundhouse once served as a vital hub for locomotive servicing and repair during the golden age of Canadian rail. Cheryl and Devon’s goal is to return it to that same level of purpose and vitality — a facility once again capable of servicing, rebuilding, and modernizing locomotives, while also acting as an economic engine for the region.
The project is more than historical preservation. It is a strategic transformation of the locomotive rebuild industry in Canada. Today, the country’s major rebuild shops are located on the east and west coasts. By restoring and activating this centrally located roundhouse, Saturday Locomotive Services Ltd will become the only major locomotive rebuild operation in the geographic heart of Canada. That central positioning reduces transport time, lowers costs, and opens new opportunities for rail operators across the country.
The Assiniboia roundhouse project blends heritage, industry, and innovation — honoring the legacy of Canadian rail while building a modern, efficient, and nationally significant locomotive service centre for generations to come.

Progressive Thinking at Saturday Locomotive Services Ltd
At Saturday Locomotive Services Ltd, we are committed to moving away from environmentally harmful chemicals traditionally used in parts preparation, locomotive cleaning, and prepaint processes. Protecting both our team members and the environment is a core value, and we are actively adopting progressive technologies that allow us to work cleaner, safer, and more efficiently.
Ultra Sonic Cleaning for Small Parts
Our second major improvement focuses on smallparts cleaning. Instead of soaking components in chemical solvents, we now use a Ultrasonic cleaning system. This technology uses water and highfrequency vibration to remove dirt, grease, and buildup.
Benefits of Sonic Cleaning
- No Chemicals Required The process uses water, eliminating the need for solvents and reducing environmental impact.
- Safe for Team Members No PPE is required, and workers are no longer exposed to harsh fumes or skin irritants.
- Consistent, HighQuality Cleaning Sonic cleaning reaches small crevices and complex shapes that chemical baths often miss.
- Environmentally Friendly With no chemical waste to manage, the process is clean, efficient, and sustainable.
Laser Cleaning Technology
Laser cleaning represents a major step forward in our modernization efforts. Compared to chemicalbased methods, laser technology offers significant advantages that align with our goals of sustainability, safety, and operational efficiency.
Benefits of Laser Cleaning
- NonAbrasive Laser cleaning removes contaminants without damaging or removing the base material, preserving parts for longer service life.
- EcoFriendly The process produces zero waste, requires no chemical disposal, and fully complies with environmental regulations.
- Precision Laser systems deliver microlevel accuracy, ensuring consistent, repeatable results across all components.
- Reduced Downtime By eliminating multiple steps required in chemical preparation, laser cleaning streamlines workflow and increases production speed.
- Cost Effective While the initial investment is significant, reduced downtime, less part damage, and the elimination of recurring chemical costs allow the equipment to pay for itself quickly.
- Improved Working Environment Laser cleaning requires minimal PPE and greatly reduces exposure to harmful substances, creating a safer, cleaner workspace for our team.
Laser cleaning is an attractive and forwardthinking solution for Saturday Locomotive Services Ltd, enhancing our cleaning processes while reducing risk and turn around time.
A Cleaner, Safer, More Efficient Future
By integrating laser and ultra sonic cleaning technologies, Saturday Locomotive Services Ltd is transforming how locomotive components are prepared and restored. These advancements support our commitment to environmental responsibility, worker safety, and operational excellence—ensuring that our historic roundhouse operates with modern standards and forward thinking practices.
