Mechanical/Electrical Apprentice

Saturday Locomotive Services Ltd. is pleased to share with you a basic job description for this position in the Assiniboia location as a Locomotive Mechanic Helper. You will be required to work overtime, and weekends as scheduled and requested. Overtime work is paid at a rate of 1.5 time’s regular pay. Holiday pay is paid at 3/52 of earned wage.

The job description for the position of Locomotive Mechanic Helper – Apprentice is as follows:

Responsibilities

Entry level job – Has responsibility for providing “hands-on” mechanical support to the production, and repair of equipment and/or tools. In shop environment, receives field tools/parts, takes them apart, repairs and refurbishes tool/part to go back to the field.

It is expected that you will work towards completing the necessary requirements to obtain Locomotive Mechanic. Wages will be reviewed as your progress towards this certification is achieved.

It will be your responsibility to wear the provided personal protective equipment (PPE) specified by your supervisor. In addition, it is your responsibility to source and wear CSA approved footwear. Prescription eye glass wearers will need to acquire prescription safety glasses. No contact lenses are to be worn on job sites.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (not listed in any particular order)

  • To maintain/repair tools as per procedure or as per supervisor & requests with completing relevant paperwork. 
  • Recondition, repair, assemble and service locomotives or other equipment.
  • Diagnose problems and determine what repairs are needed.
  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections as required.
  • Repair, service or assemble any type of machinery.
  • Enter parts used and work notes in Service box on appropriate work order.
  • To prepare equipment and taking part in loading/unloading when sending/receiving equipment to/from the site. 
  • Maintain living out allowance records
  • To ensure that workshop, truck, trailer and toolboxes are in a clean and organized state at all times. 
  • Maintenance of equipment is in proper working form 
  • Know and understand Saturday Locomotive Services Ltd. Quality Policy and comply with all requirements of the Quality Systems Manual, Operating and Technical Procedures and Workplace Instructions 
  • Must understand and comply with all safety rules and company policies of Saturday Locomotive Services Ltd.
  • Maintain a clean work area including the machine being serviced.
  • Maintain safe work habits.
  • Check and report any shortages and malfunction to Manager.
  • Maintain and care for all shop tools, machines and equipment.
  • Complete disassembly and inspect, as quick as possible, so parts may be ordered early and machine work can be scheduled promptly.
  • Notify Manager when parts need to be expedited.
  • Suggest any additional repairs needed to supervisor or manager.
  • Collect and promptly process oil sample kits, maintain and schedule
  • Complete on-site job safety program as presented.
  • Use various hand and power tools.
  • Operate equipment such as overhead or mobile cranes, skid steer, forklifts to assist in tasks.
  • Conduct inspections and tests, while also repairing or replacing parts with limited resources in remote locations, outdoors and in all types of weather conditions
    • Maintain consistent safe work habits by:
    • Following all health and safety rules and procedures;
    • Reporting hazardous conditions to your supervisor;
    • Wearing or using prescribed protective equipment;
    • Reporting any job-related injury or illness to your supervisor and seeking treatment promptly;
    • Refraining from the operation of any equipment without both proper instructions and authorization;
    • Knowing the location, type and operation of all emergency equipment related to your specific job.
    • Environment safety check before commencing work.
    • WORKING SAFELY IS A CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT.
      • Support and promote the safety culture.
      • Make a point to thank every customer. Communication with the customer’s/supplier’s is a key element of good relations.
      • Help maintain cleanliness, neatness and safety of buildings, sites, and equipment.
      • Attend and actively participate in meetings and training.
      • Do not second guess other technician’s work in front of customers.
      • Do not assume any liability or place any blame on the company, manufacturers, or other programs, etc.
      • Keep company vehicles clean and serviced.
      • Wear provided uniform, no inappropriate clothing, rude sayings or drug pictures.
      • Complete training as presented, in a reasonable time period, ie. railway courses, crane training, etc.
      • Stay current with technical changes, continuing your education as directed, etc.
      • Give special attention to repeat repairs or comebacks to correct problems and avoid future shop comebacks and unnecessary expenses.
      • Limit the use of cellphones when on company clock, unless of emergency.
      • Help control expenses and produce as much quality work as possible.
      • Do not abuse coffee breaks, sick leave, etc. I am to be dressed and ready for work before punching in.
      • Follow all policies and procedures as specified in company manuals and as directed in the employee handbook.
      • Demonstrate behaviors consistent with the Company’s Values in all interactions with customers, co-workers and vendors.
      • Practice confidentiality in and out of the job sites.
      • Participate in all company functions (meetings, customer events, etc.).
      • Conduct business in an ethical and professional manner.
      • Perform other duties as assigned from time to time.
      • Essential Functions:

          • Honest, respectful, non-violent in all activities;
          • Predictable and timely attendance, workmanship, and cooperation;
          • Report any incidents of discrimination or harassment to the human resource person or board of directors;
          • Ability to read, speak and write the English language;
          • Ability to legally drive and operate a motor vehicle and provide driver’s abstract yearly when hired and yearly in January.
          • Must have made full disclosure of past work history and training;
          • Ability to work on feet a minimum of 8 hours per day;
